The Pledge of Allegiance

Process

20160310045820uvyna.jpg

Rationale:
We are learning about TN history in the class. As an extension to the lesson, I felt it would be valuable to learn about United States history as well. Incorporating something that the students could relate to is appealing and will grab their attention. Learning about The Pledge of Allegiance is apart of the United States history.

Materials:
Computer, projector, ELMO, YouTube, PebbleGo, BrainPop, jr., pencil, journal, The Pledge of Allegiance activity sheet

Steps:
1. I will start the lesson by waving the United States of America flag
2. Next, I will begin to recite The Pledge of Allegiance
3. I will ask the students what does this mean
4. I will show then show a video on PebbleGo of The Pledge of Allegiance
5. The video will show information regarding how The Pledge of Allegiance came about, who started it, and the importance it has on America
7.  As a class, we will do research on The Pledge of Allegiance using the internet with the help of the sites; PebbleGo, YouTube, and BrainPop, Jr.
8. As a class, we will do research on The Pledge of Allegiance by using books in the library center related to The Pledge of Allegiance and also the dictionary
9. For individual work, the students will complete the fill in the blank sheet of The Pledge of Allegiance (Show example on ELMO)
10. Share with your neighbor your responses once completed
11. Complete journal entry with drawing 1 picture and writing 1 complete sentence regarding the topic

Differentiation:
Allow for students to cut and paste the fill in the blank answers onto the activity sheet instead of writing
Require higher level students to write the fill in the blank answers without having  a key with the words to look at
Allow for students to draw about their response in their journal instead of writing
Pair students with partners to complete activity sheet
