TASK 1    ~   Letter of acceptance

Congratulations for accepting the mission!!

Your first task is to write a letter of acceptance to the Tasmanian Environmental Studies Board. In your letter you must include at least 3 reasons why you will be the best person for the expedition.

You have been chosen out of millions of students so don't sell yourself short! The letter must be formally presented.

You need to start a folder to put your completed tasks in to keep as a memory of your expedition and to hand in on completion of the webquest.

Print your letter and place it in the front of your mission folder. Open up a word document to compose you letter.

You will be travelling by ship to the bottom of the world.

Quick! You must show that you are dedicated - start writing your acceptance letter!

TASK 2  ~  Packing to go!

Your next task is to pack your bag for the expedition.

Read the article about Antarctic clothing.

Dress the scientist at Discovering Antarctica, so he can work in the cold.

Remember you are traveling by boat so you may only take a certain amount of luggage. Your limit is 20 kg. You must think carefully about what you will need and how much it will weigh.

Open the attachment 'Activity page' where I have listed the items you may choose and fill in the suitcase with your choices. Remember to keep track of how many kilograms you are packing.

Your ship has arrived in Antarctica. Watch the video of your arrival.

TASK 3 ~ Design a campsite!

You really are doing well to be at the third task already.

For this task you must design a campsite in paint. The site must take the following things into consideration:
weather (strong to withstand the wind)
size (how many people it will fit)
             layout (bedrooms, study, food preparation)
             Danger (keep out animals!!)

Carry out your research using  classroom antarctica as a starting point.

Open up paint... print your design to add to your mission folder!

TASK 4 ~ Animal Research.

This is the part of the expedition where you must venture out and research three animals. I have listed a web site that you may find useful, however I encourage you to do some exploring of you own. Be adventurous!

You must find out each animals:

scientific name
average weight
average length
their coloring (i.e. penguin - white, black)
what their main food source is
three interesting facts that you learn from your research

Follow this link to help you with your research. Use the attachment 'Animal Research' to record your findings.Remember to print it off to add to your folder.

TASK 5 ~ Power point

Now that you have a bank of information about Animals of Antarctica you must choose one from your research and design an informational Powerpoint presentation about your chosen animal. The presentation must be informative and include at least one picture. Be as creative as possible.

Open Powerpoint from your start menu. Print a condensed version when you have finished for your mission folder. Good luck!

TASK 6 ~    Macquarie Station!

How exciting!!! Today you are off to Macquarie Island station! Your task is to follow the link to Macquarie Island station web cam and record today's temperature and the highest and lowest temperatures ever recorded at the station. You will also be able to view what the station looks like right now. Wow!

Open the Weather Statistics excel document and record your findings.
Remember to print it off for your folder.

TASK 7 ~ Journal Entry

Congratulations this is your last task!

Now that your expedition has come to an end you should have many great experiences to write about.  All great explorers keep a journal, now its your turn to write a journal entry while you travel home aboard ship.

Follow the link to read some real Antarctic journal entries before you open up word to write your own. This will be a great entry to complete your mission folder.  I hope you enjoyed you expedition.
