A Day in the Life of a Slave

  1. With a partner, silently, watch the video. Then discuss with your partner what you�ve learned about slavery. Individually, jot down your ideas and reaction to the video in your social studies notebook. Make sure to title it �Webquest part 1�.

2.       2. With the same partner, log in and click on Mission 2: Flight to Freedom. With your partner watch/listen to the prologue then play part 1 and part 2. Working collaboratively, make decisions in the game together. When finished, discuss with your partner the game and how it felt to be a slave on the plantation and on the run. In your social studies notebook, individually, write one paragraph reflecting on the game. Then write one paragraph on how you felt being a slave and making decisions to live. Make sure to title it �Webquest part 2�.

3.       3. Independently, explore the memories of the slaves reading the descriptions and listening to their firsthand accounts. Then choose 4 to summarize and take notes, in bullet form, in your social studies notebook. Make sure to title it �Webquest part 3�.

4.      4. Independently, explore �On the Plantation� and then answer the following questions in your social studies notebook. Make sure to title it �Webquest part 4�.

  • What kind of work did Walter do on the plantation?
  • Why did Walter�s new master want to sell him even though he was skilled at woodwork?
  • Briefly explain the process Fannie Moore, and other slaves, had to endure when wanting to leave the plantation.
  • Name a few reasons why slaves might be punished.

5.       5. Independently, read and takes notes, in bullet form, on chapter 0: Story Preface, chapter 1: A Child Slave, and chapter 2: Get Educated. Choose 4 interesting facts from EACH chapter and record them in your social studies notebook. Make sure to title it �Webquest part 5�.

6.      6. Independently, read this passage and then answer the following questions in your social studies notebook. Make sure to title it �Webquest part 6�.

  • How did the name �Underground Railroad� emerge?(What was developing that influenced the name?)
  • List and explain the terms associated with the Underground Railroad.
  • Briefly explain the typical journey a runaway slave went on.

7.       7. Independently, watch this video and then answer the following questions in your social studies notebook. Make sure to title it �Webquest part 7�.

  • Who was Harriet Tubman? Why was she important?
  • About how many slaves did she free?
  • Why were slave owners afraid of her?
  • In your opinion, do you think you would have runaway to become free? Why or why not?
  • In your opinion, do you think you would have enough courage, like Harriet Tubman, to return and become a conductor to help other slaves to their freedom? Why or why not?

8.      8. For your final project, I want you to assume the role of an abolitionist who is writing an article against slavery. You will be sharing the article with other abolitionists and people who have the same view on slavery as you do.  Using all the information you�ve learned through this webquest, you must include:

  • At least three reasons why slavery should be abolished.
  • Information about the Underground Railroad and its process.
  • Brief bio/summary of one important figure that took part in the Underground Railroad.
  • At least one picture, cited.

Use the printing press tool I have linked below. You can choose either a newspaper article or brochure, NOT the flyer/sign/poster. Use different fonts and colors in a purposeful way.

Key Terms:

Abolitionist: a person who advocated or supported the abolition of slavery in the U.S.

Abolish: to do away with; put an end to.
