Process

Day one:

Explore the interactive globe on http://www.earthbrowser.com/. You will look at each section and notice the shapes of the land masses, the differences in sizes, colors, and texture. You will understand that the globe is designed to depict the geography of each continent. On a sheet of paper, each of you will write down what you think each color of the globe represents, what the textures represent, and what the climate is like for each area of the globe. Once you have completed this task, the class will rejoin in a large group discussion about what you think each color texture and area on the globe represents. Each idea that is stated will be written on the board for you to refer to as we continue in the lesson. You will then create a compare and contrast chart as a large group to discuss what you think are the similarities and differences in the regions of the globe. Following this, you will discuss new vocabulary terms; equator, prime meridian and climate. You will watch the video "Maps and Globes". Following the video, independently you will write out your own definitions of the new vocabulary terms to demonstrate what you learned. Following that you will write a journal about what maps and globes represent.

Differentiation: If you struggle with writing, sit near your teacher and have them help you write down your ideas.

Day two:

Read sections from the book "The Americas" after reading each section, you will compare and contrast North America and South America using the interactive globe. You will discuss their locations, prominent features, climate and land masses. Independently, you will create your own Venn Diagram that depicts both North America, and South America differently and then how they are similar. You may use both words and illustrations to do this.

Day three:

Read "The Everything Kids Geography Book" sections and Europe and Asia. After you completed reading compare and contrast the geography of Europe and Asia using the interactive globe. You will discuss their locations, prominent features, climate and land masses. Independently, you will create your own Venn Diagram that depicts both Europe and Asia differently and then how they are similar. You may use both words and illustrations to do this.

Day four:

You will Continue reading "The Everything Kids Geography Book". This time you will read about Africa, Australia and Antarctica. Then compare and contrast the differences of each continent using the interactive Globe. Independently, you will create a three part Venn Diagram that depicts Africa, Australia and the Antarctica's.

Day five:

You will begin by watching the video "The Seven Continents of the World". This video will summarize what you have learned in the previous days of the assignment. Following this video, you will create your own globe. On your globe you will create each continent and their prominent features as well as the oceans. You will create your own map legend with symbols you designed and display your globe to demonstrate your knowledge of geography.
