Day 1:

1.      You and your teachers will work together to come up with a list of things to celebrate and make cards for. These will be written down on the Smart Board in front of the class.

2.     Now comes the exciting part: What are you going to name your company? Lets look at some cards from other companies. Also, on your classroom Smart-board, click HERE  to view examples of other card company names. Who has any ideas? We will write down all ideas and then vote on the final name of your company.

3.      Now we are going to look at actual cards that other companies have made. Turn these cards over, and look at the design on the back of the card. This is called a logo. Lets look at some logos now and display them on the smart board to giveyou some ideas:  Click HERE to go to site. What logo should we create for our greeting card company? You can all draw a design for a logo and then we can vote.

4.      Now we will take our list of events to celebrate to look up words of celebration under google images. This will help us to see what designs are associated with different celebrations: balloons go with birthdays, and new babies, flowers go with May Day, Mothers Day, Valentines Day, or even just stationery, etc. Let your teacher help you write down your favorite ideas. Go to google images and type in the symbol you want to see, or use these sites below.

1.     Today we will work in groups of 4 to do a matching game. Ask your teacher for these materials. This game will have cards with icons such as balloons, cars, flowers, robots, etc. as well as cards with labels of the text event being celebrated. You will work with friends to match the appropriate items with the label of the event to get an idea of what they can create when thinking of a particular card they will be designing. There will be several icons with flowers because you can use flowers for many different celebrations. This is true of many icons.

Day 3:

1.        Today it is your turn to begin creating your art. You will each be given a paper and pencil. You can choose a video to watch and follow along on their iPads for how to draw a specific animal or item. For all completed cards, please make sure you use at least three colors in your design.

2.        When you are done, you can each trace the list of grayscale greetings that are most commonly used on cards.  Your teacher will give you this sheet. Turn it in to your teacher when you are done.

Day 4:

1.      Now, we are going to learn how we send cards from where we are to the person that we want to get the card. We are going to learn about the post office. Did you know that long before there were computers, our country could only use the postoffice to send information? Computers can help us with communication today, but we still need our post offices. Lets learn how they work: Watch All SystemsAt Work by the Smithsonian by clicking HERE.

2.      You saw many items getting mailed at the post office in that video. Who remembers what information is needed so that the mail carrier can get your card from where you are to the right person? Each of you will choose an envelope which you will address so that the post office can do their job correctly. Lets watch a quick lesson on this video. Afterwards, you will have extra time to practice on your own. See how to address an envelope by clicking HERE.

Day 5:  Today you will be given many supplies to create freestyle designs. Your only limit is your imagination. You may choose from watercolor paints, crayons, pastels, chalks, colored pencils and markers. Have fun. Include at least three colors in your design.

Day 6: Today you will choose which two cards to upload into the computer as a jpeg for modification in a graphic art program such aswww.picmonkey.com. You will bring those to your teacher and learn how to scan and upload your design into the computer.

Day 7: We get to work with some other students in our school today. They take a graphic art class and will be helping you to make any professional looking changes you might want to make to your artwork before we have them printed into cards. You will decide which greeting you want to type on the front of the card. When your final design is complete, we will send it to the printing department to make several copies of your card.

Follow-up and final activity: We just got our cards back from the print shop. Today you will select a colorful envelope which you will address to someone you would like to send your card to. You may write a personal note inside of your card if you like. We will the put a stamp on your card and take it to the campus mailbox.

Hangman: This is a tab on this webquest that you can play to learn the new vocabulary from this unit. It is just for fun and not included in your grade!
