The Quest for the Golden Death Mask of Queen Nefertiti

Curriculum:  Social Studies


Grade Level:  9-12 grade, level 3-4 developing and expanding English Language Learners

Duration:  Two weeks of 45 minute sessions

Objectives:  At the end of this module students will be able to:

1.             Describe the living conditions of the ancient populations of Egypt.

2.         Distinguish between the elite ruling class and the common people.

3.          Identify religious beliefs and traditions.

4.          Create a wall border to be interpreted of hieroglyphic writings with a collaborative group.

5.          Sequence the ancient funeral process of mummification.

6.          Show the route taken to search for Queen Nefertiti�s Golden Death Mask.

7.          Create geographic map of ancient Egypt including the River Nile.

8.          Create a graphic organizer of ancient Egyptian clothing of the elite and the common Egyptian citizen.

Materials:  Computer with internet access, Microsoft Office/Word 2007-2013, Pencils and Paper, Paints, Colored Pencils, Wall border poster board

Procedures:  Brainstorm images and people that come to mind when they thing of Ancient Egypt; such as pyramids, mummies, the Nile River, King Tut, Queen Nefertiti, 

Research the time period of the height of Ancient Egypt when the society depended upon religious customs, their rulers and how and why they build the pyramids.

Three-person groups of students will take on tasks to research such as a day in the life of an ordinary Egyptian, priest, King and Queen.  The groups will research the clothing, funeral processes of the 

kings and queens.  The groups will draw pictures of hieroglyphics with their interpretations. A map will be drawn showing the delta valley and the places where the great pyramids were built.  

Conditions:  The students will meet on several occasions, first they will meet in the classroom for the initial meeting of ideas, two days later they will meet to check each other's work and research, at

 that time they will make any additional corrections.  Another meeting will evaluate the pictures and videos to be incorporated into the project.  The last meeting will be with all of the groups so they 

can make sure that all tasks run smoothly for a great presentation.
