Process

Task 1 Process:

1) Choose one of four ethnic groups whose identity you will assume.

     a) Chinese

     b) Korean

     c) Japanese

     d) Filipino

 

2) Select a family member or friend who remained back in the home country of China, Korea, Japan, or the Philippines to whom you will write a letter after you arrive on the sugar plantation in Hawaii. In the letter, inform the chosen relative or friend of what you have seen, heard, felt, and experienced during your long sea voyage to Hawaii and what you have seen, heard, felt and experienced after arriving in Hawaii.  Use the links below each question as research examples/aids.

3) Research the ethnic group whose identity you will assume.

     a) Search the Internet

     b) Visit your local library

     c) Locate, contact, and interview persons who worked on the plantations.

     d) Locate, contact, and interview relatives of these persons.

     e) Locate, contact, and interview friends/acquaintances of these persons.

 

4. Produce an outline of your letter that is based on your research,  

 

Task 2 Process:

1. List the benefits of forming a workers union.

    a. How does the individual worker benefit?

    b. How do all of the workers benefit?

    c. How does the company benefit?

 

2. List the costs of forming a workers union.

     a. What are the costs of forming a union to the individual worker?

     b. What are the costs of forming a union to all workers?

     c. What are the costs of forming a union to the company?

 

 

3. Perform a skit where you debate the costs and benefits of forming a union with your coworkers(classmates).

     a. Select individuals to be for a union.  Use the research that you have     done to help you make the argument for a union.

     b. Select individuals to be against a union.  Use the research that you have done to help you make an argument against a union

 

 

 

Task 3 Process

1. Brainstorm ideas for the main message or BIG IDEA of your poster.

     a. More money (for worker and company)

     b. Safer work conditions

     c. Better work conditions

     d. Improved life for future generations.

     e. More and better product for the world.

     f. Health benefits

    g. Think of a catchy logo

 

2. Sketch the layout for your poster.

4. Think of useful and/or unique places to place your poster for maximum effect

 

5. Think of useful or unique ways to display your poster

    a. A page in the local newspaper

    c. Community bulletin boards outside of supermarkets or shopping centers

    d. Community social events like sporting events

    e. Local public or private schools
