Process

Now that we have read the very "Hungry Caterpillar" aloud as a whole group. I am now going to break you up into groups of four. I will give each student a number 1-4. Your number will be written on a sticky note that I will hand to you for you to keep safe. It is very important for you to remember your number.

Here is your task:

Number 1 (ones): research to find out what happens during the pupa/chrysalis stage.

Number 2 (twos): research to find out what happens during the butterfly stage.

Number 3 (threes): research to find out what happens during the egg stage.

Number 4 (fours): research to find out what happens during the caterpillar stage.

Use your paper to write down as many facts as you can. Write down at least five facts about your stage.

Don't forget to have fun!

You can use these websites to help you find out more about each stage.

http://www.tooter4kids.com/LifeCycle/Stages.htm- This website has lots of information about butterflies. The website also includes pictures and descriptions of each stage of the butterfly.

http://mrnussbaum.com/insects-play/butterfly_life_cycle/- This website has a brief overview of each stage of the butterfly's lifecycle. Click on the stage you are researching to find out more about that particular stage.

http://www.kidsbutterfly.org/life-cycle- This website briefly describes each cycle and has a pictures of each cycle.

http://www.vtaide.com/png/butterfly.htm- This website has a picture of the life cycle of a butterfly with a brief description.

Some guiding questions to help you research:

  • What stage does your stage come before and after (Is it the first, second, third, or fourth stage?)
  • What happens during this stage?
  • How does the soon to be/butterfly prepare for this stage?
  • Does it need anything to prepare for this stage?
  • How long does this stage last?
  • How is this stage important to the lifecycle?

When finished researching you will meet with your group to discuss. Each group must agree on two of the most unique or important facts for each stage.

Then use your poster board to create the life cycle of the butterfly. You must put each stage in the correct order, label, draw a picture for each stage, and write at least to facts for each stage.

Remember this must be neat, so use your creativity. You are a team! Use your rubric to check and make sure you have everything.
