To teach about Siberia and its culture, it is essential to understand its geographic and ethnic diversity in order to avoid creating or strengthening the stereotypes of Siberia. It is important to understand that not all Siberians are alike or eat the same foods or speak the same language or even think the same. Your first task is that of a cartographer. You will create physical, political, and thematic maps to explore and analyze the geography of Siberia.

As you explore the geography of Siberia, keep the following questions in mind. We will discuss these once you have completed your task.

Essential Questions

1.   How does physical geography impact human geography?

2.   What are the major physical characteristics of Siberia? What are the major political divisions?

3.   How does climate impact human activity in a region?

4.   What is the difference between the northern and southern regions of Siberia?

5.   What are some reasons for divisions at the local and regional levels?

6.  How do natural resources influence patterns of economic activity and land use in regions?
