Unit 1: The Choices We Make

Embedded Assessment 1:  Revising a Personal Narrative About Choice
Step 1: You will locate your Timed Writing prompt from activity 1.11
Step 2: You will review your draft with your writing group.
Step 3: You will create a revision plan.
Step 4: You will edit, revise and prepare your writing for publication.
Step 5: You will write a reflection of the learning process.

Embedded Assessment 2:Creating an Illustrated Myth
Step 1:  You will analyze the importance of illustrations in a story.
Step 2:  You will brainstorm ideas for your original myth.
Step 3:  You will identify at least 3 illustrations that will go with your myth.
Step 4:  You will create a plot outline for your myth.
Step 5:  You will draft, edit, revise and prepare your myth for publication.
Step 6:  You will write a reflection of the learning process.

Unit 2:  What Influences My Choices?

Embedded Assessment 1:  Analyzing an Advertisement and Creating a New One.
Step 1:  You will select a print advertisement and write an analytical paragraph.
Step 2:  You will create a new advertisement for the same product that targets a different audience.
Step 3:  You will write a reflection to explain the relationship between the content of an ad and the intended audience.

Embedded Assessment 2:  Writing a Letter to the Editor
Step 1:  You will find an appropriate editorial.
Step 2:  You will analyze the editorial.
Step 3:  You will write a draft, edit, revise and prepare for publishing.
Step 4:  You will send editorial to the author.

Unit 2:  Our Choices and Life's Lessons

Embedded Assessment 1:  Writing an Analytical Essay
Step 1:  You will review your four Choices and Consequences charts, and choose one character whose choices you will discuss.
Step 2:  You will highlight character's most significant choices.
Step 3:  You will determine which organizational pattern is most appropriate for this assignment.
Step 4:  You will draft and outline, draft paper, revise and edit, and prepare for publishing.

Embedded Assessment 2:  Researching and Presenting a Problem and Solutions
Step 1:  You will brainstorm types of social and environmental problems that occur in a work of literature.
Step 2:  You will research two or three problems to decided which problem to pursue.
Step 3:  You will decide on one topic to research and find solutions to.
Step 4:  You will create a digital presentation, trifold, brochure, or informational video to publish information.

Unit 4:  Reflecting on My Choices

Embedded Assessment 1:  Making Revision Choices
Step 1:  You will choose one piece of writing from previously in the year to revise.
Step 2:  You will create a revision plan.
Step 3:  You will write a new draft, edit and revise.
Step 4:  You will publish your revised assignment in the class book.

Step 1:  You will write, revise, rehearse, and present an original monologue.

Embedded Assessment 2:  Creating a Narrative Poem
Step 1:  You will brainstorm ideas for a narrative poem about the concept of choice.
Step 2:  You will draft, revise, edit for publishing.
Step 3:  You will perform your narrative poem in front of an audience.
Step 4:  You will write final reflection.
