Expressionism

Process

1. Working independently, you will visit the 8 links at the bottom of this page and read about Expressionism, as well as six of the most important painters of this art movement - Willem de Kooning, Paul Klee, Edvard Munch, Max Beckmann, Vasily Kandinsky, and Howard Hodgkin.  Be sure to read through every link and view multiple examples of each artists' work!

2. As you read through these links, be sure to answer the following questions:
  • When and Where did Expressionism occur?
  • What were the main characteristics of Expressionist painting?
  • What subjects did these artists tend to paint?
  • How did these artists respond to their subjects? What emotions were conveyed? (You may not find an answer to this question in the readings, so use your own knowledge to interpret the emotions for yourself)
3. After reading through all of the links, choose two artists to write about for your paper. At this point, you should find 2 or 3 other students who chose the same artists to work with in a group.  While each student will turn in their own individual paper, your group will complete research as a team and present the information in class.  Be sure that your papers and presentations cover the following information:
  • Which two artists you chose, and a short biography (1 paragraph total, not 1 paragraph per artist)
  • A description and analysis of each artists' work - focus on subject matter, emotions, and how the Elements of Art and Principles of Design are used
  • A summary of the similarities and differences between the two artists - focus on their approach to Expressionism (Ex. abstraction, figurative, color, brushstrokes, etc.)
  • Which characteristics of Expressionism that you would most like to apply to your next painting
4. Your final paper is due in two weeks on Friday, November 16th, and should be 1-2 pages long (1 page single-spaced or 2 pages double-spaced).  This paper will be worth a total of 16 points. You will also complete your group presentations during this class period, which will be worth 4 points.

The total weight of this project is worth 20 points!

*Please note: While this research paper is a separate assignment from the in-class Expressionist painting you will be creating, the two assignments are closely related.  If you do not do well on this assignment, you will likely have a difficult time when you begin working on your painting!
