Part of this activity will be individual work and part will be done in groups. Follow the directions below and get ready to have some fun!

PART 1

  1. At the bottom of this page is a list of 6 architectural movements. As a group divide this list so that each person is responsible for one.
  2. Now work independently. Click on the links next to your chosen cultural movement, eg. Art Nouveau. Read the descriptions and take good notes. You will be teaching these concepts to your group later in the lesson.
  3. Regroup. Now it is time to begin the scavenger hunt. Below you will find a list of addresses. Next to these are architectural styles for you to find. Copy and paste the address into Google maps
  4. Activate street view mode. Using the arrow keys "walk" down the street. Zoom in on buildings as you go to determine if it matches the style you are searching for. This should be a group disccussion with the person assigned to research that style acting as guide.
  5. Once you find a building that matches the style you are searching for take a screen shot. If you are using a PC, hit the print screen button. This will copy the screen image to the clipboard. Open an image editor, select "paste" and "save as". Name it the style, eg. "artnouveau.jpg.
  6. Repeat steps 3-5 until you have found all six buildings.

PART 2:

Now it is time to demonstrate what you have leaned by organizing and presenting a "walking tour".

  1. Open up a slideshow program, either Powerpoint or a web based program such as Google Docs
  2. Create a slide show by inserting image files of screen shots you took in part 1 step 5.
  3. Work together as a group to write short descriptions to accompany these slides.
  4. Present your slide show to the class.
