***************************************************************************************

First: Use the Internet to find recipes for a traditional Thanksgiving meal. Remember, you must include the following dishes:

Turkey
CranberrySauce
Stuffing
A Vegetable

A Dessert

Here are some websites that will help you plan your recipes.

Use the Thanksgiving Menu sheet below to create a menu for your feast. You must write the title of your dish and the name of the website where you found the recipe.

Second: Convert the recipes to feed 12 people. (6 adults and 6 children)

Some of your recipes may serve less-or more- than 12 people. Therefore, you will need to use multiplication and division to convert the recipe to serve 12 people.

Step 1: Find the number of servings

Step 2: If the serving size is less than 12:
Divide 12 by the number of servings
Then, multiply each ingredient measurement by the quotient

               Example: Servings = 4
               12 / 4 = 3
               3 x 1 cup = 3 cups

Step 3: If the serving size is greater than 12:
Divide the number of servings by 12
Then, divide each ingredient measurement by the quotient

              Example: Servings = 24
              24 / 12 = 2
              6 cups / 2 = 3 cups

***************************************************************************************

Third: Fill out the Thanksgiving Recipe Cards for each food item.

Some measurements are equivalent to others. For example: 2 cups = 1 pint. Recipes are written using the smallest equivalent.

Use one of the following conversion calculators to determine the correct unit of measurement (smallest equivalent) for your ingredients.

Next, complete the Thanksgiving Recipe Cards found below for each recipe. The recipes need to be for 12 servings. Include the oven temperature and cooking duration.

***************************************************************************************

Fourth: Create a grocery list.

Use the Thanksgiving Grocery List sheet found below to create a grocery list of items you will need to cook your Thanksgiving feast. Some of your recipes may call for the same ingredient. You only have to write the food once, but do write the amount you need. Other items, like flour or sugar, you will only write once. The typical package is large enough for most of your needs.

Example: Eggs (3)
               Flour (1 pkg.)
               Potatoes (6)

***************************************************************************************

Fifth: Use the circular to find the sales prices for the recipe ingredients.

Grocery stores often send out circulars for popular Thanksgiving foods and ingredients in the newspapers throughout the month of November. A circular is a weekly advertisement that lists all of the store's reduced price items.

Open the Thanksgiving Circular found below to view the discounts and sales prices of commonly used Thanksgiving ingredients.

Step 1: Use one of the websites listed below -- or information from your local market--to find the regular prices of the food items.

Step 2: Use the Thanksgiving Circular to find discount prices.

Step 3: Calculate how much each food item will cost.

(Make your calculations in your Math Journal).

***************************************************************************************

Sixth: Calculate the budget for your Thanksgiving shopping trip.

Now that you know how much each food item will cost, you can calculate a budget for your Thanksgiving shopping trip. In order to do this, you must multiply a standarad sales tax to the total amount from the previous section.

Step 1: Add the totals from the previous step

Example:
Milk, butter, cheese, heavy cream: $8.00

                                        Sausage: $2.50
                          10 Produce items: $10.00

                                            Total: $20.50

Step 2: Multiply your total amount by 7%--this new number is the amount of sales tax the grocery store will add to your bill.

(Remember to convert your percentage to a decimal).

Example:
Previous Total: $20.50
                         x 0.07

Total Sales Tax: $1.435

Step 3: Add your total from step one and your total from step two together.

Example:
Total 1: $20.50
Total 2: $1.435

New Total: $21.935

Step 4: Round to the nearest hundredth to find the grand total for your Thanksgiving shopping trip budget.

Example:
$21.935 ROUNDS UP

Grand Total: $21.94

Step 5: Record your Grand Total in your Math Journal.

***************************************************************************************

Seventh: Determine what time you will begin cooking the meal.
Eighth: Create a timeline for cooking each item.

Wow! Who knew you had to spend so much money for one feast?! Well, you are almost ready to set the table and carve the turkey, but first you should probably cook the bird!

Notice that your recipes gave suggested times and temperatures for cooking. In these steps, you are going to create a timeline to determine when you will cook each item. On the timeline, record when you will begin cooking each dish. Also, indicate at what time you plan to serve your meal.

Use the Thanksgiving Timeline sheet found below to record your timeline for preparing your feast.

Notes:

Look at the prep time and the overall cook time to determine how long a dish will take to prepare.
Most ovens have two racks, you may cook more than one item in an oven at one time.
