A Carnival Game

Process

Here we go:

  1. Creating the class "quilt" mat

  1. Use the color grids you created last week (remember you could color the squares in any colored pattern you chose)
  2. Cut out your 2 color grids and tape them together. There are 5 of you in class so you would create a rectangle. You can choose to create a 2 row and 5 column quilt or a 5 row and 2 column quilt.
What other equipment will you need?

  • 10c coins
  • math centimeter cubes (1 unit)
  • poster showing the value of the prize for each color.
Class rules of the carnival game

  • The class "quilt" of colored grids is placed on the floor and used as a target mat.
  • A player stands about 5 feet from the mat and tosses a centimeter cube onto the mat.
  • If the cube does not land on the mat, the player gets another turn.
  • If the cube lands on more than one color, the color that is covered by most of the cube is used.
  • A player wins a prize for their cube landing on a particular color.
  • Each throw (ticket) costs a player 10c.
Time to play the game, and find the answers to the following questions:

  1. Suppose you bought 50 tickets. How much would you pay for 50 tickets?
  2. How many throws landed on each color?
  3. What was the value prize of each color?
  4. What were the total percentages of the throws for each color?
  5. Did the class make more money or lose money based on how much throwers won using the color prizes?
Inventing your own variation of the carnival game

Create your own variation of the game using the following questions as your guide:

  • How much should you charge per ticket?
  • What colors should win prizes?
  • What should the prizes be (monetary value)?
  • How will your decision affect the number of tickets sold?
  • Will you make more money if you charge a lot for a ticket  and offer larger prizes? Or will a high ticket price discourage people from buying tickets?
Create a poster with your ticket prices and over the next few days record the total amount of money the group would earn. HOW? Multiply the number of times a cube lands on each color by the amount of the prize for that color
