Process

The process for running various sports programs and facilities is one of higher than average difficulty out here on the Kwajalein Atoll in comparison to ones in the states. Kwajalain Atoll is located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean halfway between Hawaii and Australia. It is home to the largest island atoll in the world. Becuase it is an island that is 3 miles long and 3/4 miles wide facilites have to be modified to fit on the island (airport and landing strip take up half of the island) and special precation is taken for the grass and dirt fields. Grass is made up of regular grass but because of the warm humid climate year round the grass can dry out rather fast or turn into a mudpit during a rainstorm. The fields are comprised of gravel and ground up coral from the ocean, therefore precation is taken to keep it raked consistantly along with a no slide/diving rule in baseball and softball. Rain is a common thing out here and can hit at any point in time and be random. Therefore rust and water leaks in the buildings cause a huge concern. Safety checks and preventative care are 2 essential things out here in order to make a sports league sucessfull. Before any type of sporting event can take place there are forms to fill out and maintenance to be done. This will ensure that all bases have been covered when it comes to making sure a season is as injury free as possible. Kwajalein atoll offers 10 Youth Sports Programs and 8 Adult Leage Programs with huge turnouts for both. Along with the sports leagues and facilities, the recreational activities have also been included in the same sector. This includes the, yaht club, surf shack, post office, movie theateres small boat marina, etc. When on an island like this one you will either come to love it or hate it. The more diversity or programs offered the more there is to do  out here. Please take a look at the photo's attached of some of the buildings that the sports and recreation department (myself included) that have to go through inspections and safety checks on a daily basis to make sure there are no safety problems.
