Do the Dewey!
Process
I. The librarian will read The Shelf Elf Helps Out in the library.
The call numbers of books are described explaining the ten categories (000-900) of the Dewey Decimal System.
You will discuss this book with your chosen partners. Your partners were chosen in class by your teacher.
Bookmarks on the Dewey Decimal System will be handed out to you. Make sure you use these bookmarks in the books that you check out today.
II. Watch the Dewey Decimal PowerPoint in the computer lab with your partner.
III. Now that you have experienced using Kidspiration to complete your "All About Me" webs, you and your partner will use it to make a web about the Dewey Decimal System. Kidspiration is a fantastic graphical organizer to begin organizing your thoughts. In the web, the ten Dewey categories should be listed as the topics. "The Dewey Decimal System" is the main idea. Once you are finished your web, show the librarian or your teacher before printing it.
IV. Come back to the library and look at the librarian's posters on the Dewey Decimal System. Go onto Destiny (our online catalog) and do a subject or keyword search for each of the ten Dewey classes. Find one book from each category with your partner and write the title and call number (book's address) on an index card. Make sure you use your shelf markers so the books are put back in the correct places. Add this information to Kidspiration. The titles of the books should be listed with their Dewey categories.
V. Read the history of Melvil Dewey on the two provided websites.
Watch the three Dewey Decimal System videos and discuss what you learned with your partner.
Take some notes of the videos on the back of your index card.
VI. Play the Dewey Decimal System games, including Dewey Hangman.
VII. Make a poster on the Dewey Decimal System with your partner. Include the ten (10) Dewey subjects and classification numbers. Draw a picture or print images from the internet related to each subject. You can go onto Google Images to find pictures of these subjects. Save your images in your H:\drive (Home Directory) and go onto Microsoft Word to add all of the images before you print. Make sure everything is clearly labeled. Include your web from Kidspiration on the back of your poster.
