First Grade Penguin WebQuest

1. Choose your penguin

First, your group will choose a penguin that you think would be a good addition to our zoo.  There are 4 possible choices:

     * Gentoo penguin

     * Emperor penguin

     * Macaroni penguin

     * Adelie penguin

2. Develop your research questions

Your teacher will assign you a role in your group.  The roles are:

     * Appearance Specialist

     * Food Specialist

     * Habitat/Nest Specialist

     * Size Specialist

As a class, you will discuss the research question you will be trying to answer for your group.  Record the research questions on your graphic organizer.

3. Research!

Now it's time to read about penguins to answer your questions.  When you click on the links below, make sure you find information about your own penguin.  Try to answer your own research question first.  Then, you can answer some of the research questions that the other specialists in your groups are researching.  Read as much as you can!

4. Collaborate

In the classroom, you will have time to meet with your group.  Each specialist should share his or her findings.  You should record the facts that your group members share so that your graphic organizer is complete.  You will need all of the facts to write your letter to the zoo.

5. Show what you know

Now that you have all of your penguin facts, it's time to write your letter.  Show the zoo that you know a lot about your penguin!  Remember to include all parts of a friendly letter.  In your letter, you should begin with a friendly introductory sentence.  You should tell why you are writing your letter, and then give the facts you have learned to help prepare the zoo to adopt your group's type of penguin.  Don't forget a closing sentence!  You will be writing a rough draft of your letter first in the classroom, so ask your teacher for help if you have questions.  Remember your friendly letter format.
