Activity 1:

Question 1: Compare/Contrast Standard and Metric forms of measurement.

Activity 1: Classify 10 fairly different items that you are able to locate in your home into categories both broad (Standard vs. Metric) and specific (gallon vs. liter, etc.) Create a table in Word or Excel to show results.

Activity 2:

Question 2: Compare/Contrast Standard and Metric forms of measurement.

Activity 2: With your assigned destination, create a daily weather forecast using both Celsius and Fahrenheit.

(Length of Activity-one week to gather data and record, two 45 min periods to extend lesson via graphing, charting or weather reporting).

Activity 3:

Question 3: Why is it important to learn the Metric system of measurement?

Activity 3: Using Microsoft Publisher, create a flyer of your design work of a room addition you will be adding on to your home. Show measurements in either Standard or Metric. Prior to activity create rubric with students to be used or grading.

Activity 4: How would you create/design a map from your home to school using either Standard or Metric measurement? Be sure to include all mapping skills learned. Use streets or locations from your directions to create hidden message puzzle at

Question 4: How can you use music to help classmates understand relationships of measuring?

Activity 5: Each group has been assigned a category of standard or metric measurement. Using a familiar tune, write your group's new lyrics to teach the rest of the class your "Math Song Guide"

Tools needed:

Rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks, measuring tape, various containers (gallon, liter, pint, quart, ounce, etc.), centimeter grid paper, the Internet, as well as access to Microsoft Publisher, Word and Excel, mapping books.
