A Journey through Canadian Education

You will be working independently in this quest to prepare a final project (journal, slide show, video, brochure, etc.) to present your findings to your school and classmates. Your final project will be an informative piece stating important events and facts having to do with Canada�s education system, both past and present, in regards to the Canadian exchange student that your family will be hosting.
The final product must include:

- A brief description of what you learned at each stop

- A picture for each piece of information mentioned about each stop

-Remember to state important events and names of people and places

1) Stop #1: Welcome to Canada! This is the first stop of your trip! Are you ready to learn exciting information about the Canadian educational system? Let�s see where the time machine will drop you off first! The time machine has dropped you off in the middle of a big crowd. At this location, you will find information about the influence of gender in the Canadian education. Research suggests that gender is a powerful factor that shapes different experiences for boys and girls. Why do you think gender has such a powerful influence on the students� education? How are children's school experiences shaped by the ways that gender interacts with 'race,' ethnicity, social class,and sexualorientation? Use the link below to find out your information! 2) Stop #2:
At this stop you will learn about the education in Canada in the 1900. You will have the opportunity to see what were the educational opportunities many years ago. You will also learn about the different subject areas that are taught in the Canadian educational system.

3) Stop #3:
Meet the people!  The time machine can take you to visit two people who were very important in Canadian history.  You can choose to visit one or both.
Bishop Laval founded a large university in Canada in 1852.  This school was for young men who wanted to work as priests and it is still open today.
Egerton Ryerson helped to create a system similar to America�s public school in Canada.


4)Stop #4:
The time machine has left you in a dark room. There is a lamp that is lit,facing a chart. The title of this chart is, �The history and development of multimedia.�
While looking at this chart, make sure to mention different methods of transmission tools that were used to relay information in education. Focus on the items under the column titled, �Audio and telecommunications.�

Then, you notice a computer is on. Use the link on the computer, to go to an online activity to find information on different kinds of technologies that were introduced in Canada. Include when the technology was created or introduced and include the name of the inventor. You are free to use an appropriate search engine (Google or Ask.com) to collect more information and/or a picture on the particular technology tool that you will include in your final project.
Activity #1 - In this link, you have the option to click on any of the games or activities and then use a web search engine to find more information on the particular technological invention.

5) Stop #5:
The time machine has taken all the way back to the first schools in Canada. Why did the Canadians start schools?
Aboriginal Education: Aboriginals are Canadian Natives, similar to Native Americans.  In the�Education� section of this article, you will see some of the reasons that Canadians felt it was important to �educate� the aboriginals long ago.

6) Stop #6: Let�s take a look at education in Canada today and how it has evolved! A large part of Canadian education is publicly funded and overseen by federal, provincial, and local governments. Education in Canada is usually divided into primary, secondary, and post secondary.
During the 17th century education was usually an informal process in which skills and values were passed down from one generation to the next. Family was the basic was the basic unit of social organization and the main context within which almost all learning took place. What were some of the skills learned many years ago? 7) Stop #7: The impact these cultures have on the practice of education, as we know it today.
-Canada's culture has historically been influenced by European culture and traditions, especially British and French. Over time, elements of the cultures of Canada's Aboriginal peoples and immigrant populations have become incorporated into mainstream Canadian culture. It has also been strongly influenced by that of its linguistic, economic, and cultural neighbor, the United States.
-Canada has always placed emphasis on fairness and inclusiveness for all people.

8) Congratulations! Your time machine has brought you back home safely. You will now be able to work on your final project at this time. Gather all materials you have created in this quest. Your notes will be considered as evidence when turning in your final project.
For your final project, remember to include information gathered from each stop.Keep in mind, you will have a maximum of 10 minutes when presenting your final project to the class. For specific guidelines, please click on the EVALUATION tab. We will go over this rubric in class but it will be your responsibility to study each of the criteria so that you will know how you will be graded for this assignment.
