Lesson 1: Anatomy and Physiology of the Brain

Introduction: Ascertain students prior knowledge of the brain and develop this further, using investigative questions and research activites.

Procedure:
  1. As a class you will log onto spiderscribe. Here you will participate in a class mind mapping activity, on your basic knowledge of the brain. The link to the mind map http://www.spiderscribe.net/app/?a4d880efd7f9a67bfdba0168a94b12f9
  2. After this, you will watch a short youtube video on the structure and function of the brain. The link to the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpAe3mk1koQ
  3. You will then be assigned an area of the brain to research
  4. Refer to the class resource page to find information related to your given area of the brain.
  5. After researching for 10mins you will upload all of your information onto the class wiki page. The link to the class wiki page is: http://20090630.wikispaces.com/Lesson+1
  6. Now focus your attention onto the interactive whiteboard
  7. Particpate and assist the class to label a diagram of the brain together on the interactive whiteboard. The link to the brain labelling diagram is the  Four Views of the Brain (d)  located at

    http://highered.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0072943696/student_view0/chapter8/labeling_exercises.html#

  8. Complete the lesson with a memory activity on the interactive whiteboard. The link to the memory activity is

    http://teens.drugabuse.gov/havefun/brain_destiny_popup.php

Closure: Focus your attention on the teacher for a brief verbal summary of the lesson.

HOMEWORK ( ASSESSMENT COMPONENT)
For homework do not forget to visit your class blog and briefly summarise the topic you learnt this lesson. Log in to: http://kidblog.org/TheBrainandNervousSystem/misskidhel/the-neuron-structure-and-function/#comments with the user name and password you have been given. If you have not been given a username and password you can log on to view the blog with the following details username: 20090630-L and password: 20090630.

Once you are logged on you must write a summary of what you have learnt this lesson and present one question at the bottom of your summary for your class members to answer. You must then go and answer one of your class members questions and upload the answer to the blog also.

You must then visit the class spider scribe located at:
http://www.spiderscribe.net/app/?42e42e51931fd3ca1821aa0a40376249
and add a leg to the spider on the relevant topic we have covered this lesson.

Your contribution to both these components will be marked and go towards your final grade for this topic.

Lesson 2 : The Nervous System: Central and Peripheral.

Introduction:The students will learn that the nevous system is a complex network of interacting organs, nerves and blood vessels. It controls every movement, thought and process within the body. It can be divided into two parts- the central and peripheral nervous sytem. They will participate in activities to research and discover more about these systems.

Procedure:
  1. Focus your attention on the teacher. He/she will present to you a power point describing the two divisons of the nervous sytem. The link to the powerpoint is  www.unit5.org/biology/.../Divisions%20of%20nervous%20syst.ppt
  2. You will then be assigned into one of two groups( either the perpheral or central nervous sytem).
  3. Whichever group you have been assigned to , you must research the fuction, anatomy and workings of that divison.
  4. After 10mins, post your findings on the class wiki page. The link for this is http://20090630.wikispaces.com/Lesson+2
  5. Focus your attention on the teacher, and enage in the class discussion using the interactive whiteboard to compare the two divisons of the nervous sytem.
  6. Return to your computer. Log onto the following website http://www.purposegames.com/game/divisions-of-the-nervous-system-quiz. Complete the quiz about the divisions of the Nervous System.

Closure: Focus your attention on the teacher for a brief verbal summary of the lesson.

__________________________________________________________________________________Lesson 3 : The Neuron: Structure and Function

Introduction:Students will explore how the shape of the neuron relates to its function within the nervous system. In addition, they will research neurotransmitters and their role in nerve transmission.

Procedure:

  1. Focus your attention on the class whiteboard. Watch and observe as the teacher creates a brainstorm about the topic of neurons and neurotransmitters.
  2. As a class assist the teacher to label a diagram of a neuron on the board. Pay particular attention to the names and parts of  each. Also make an effort to remember the different types of neurons that exist.
  3. You will be assigned into one of three groups. Each group will research a different type of neuron and neurotransmitter.
  4. Whichever group you have been assigned to , you must research that neuron in detail and examine its structure and function.
  5. Post your findings on the class wiki page. The link to this is http://20090630.wikispaces.com/Lesson+3
  6. Focus your attention on the teacher, and enage in the class discussion using the interactive whiteboard to compare the different types of neurons.
  7. In your groups you will engage in a quick role play activity. You will  show the class how your neuron works in the body. You will do this via your choice of actions and movements around the class.

Closure: Focus your attention on the teacher for a brief verbal summary of the lesson.

Lesson 4: Disorders of the Brain and Nervous system

Introduction:Students will investigate and outline some possible illnesses that are related to the nervous system. They will then explain if they are acquired or genetically inherited in nature.

Procedure:

  1. Focus your attention on the class whiteboard. Closely observe as your teacher creates a mindmap outling the different types of disorders that can affect the brain and nervous system.
  2. You will be assigned a different nervous system disorder to research. You will explore the cause symptoms and treatment of your illness.
  3. Post your findings on the class wiki page. The link to this is http://20090630.wikispaces.com/Lesson+4
  4. Log on to the class blog page. You will do your homework task now as you have a test on this content next. The link to the class blog is http://kidblog.org/TheBrainandNervousSystem/misskidhel/the-neuron-structure-and-function/#comments You have 5mins to post your response.
  5. You will now log onto the class spiderscribe and do your homework task now. you have 2 minutes to do this. The link to the class spiderscribe is http://www.spiderscribe.net/app/?42e42e51931fd3ca1821aa0a40376249
  6. The remainder of the lesson will be spent completing a topic test. It is a to be completed individually and under test conditions. The link to the test is located at the bottom of the page in the resources section. The teacher will hand you a hard copy of this for you to fill out and return at the end of the lesson for marking.

Closure: Focus your attention on the teacher for a brief verbal summary of the lesson.

Homework:

Today the homework task was done in class instead of at home due to the topic test, this will still contribute the students final grade for the topic.
