A DEADLY MEETING BETWEEN THE AZTECS & THE SPANISH CONQUISTADORS

STEP #1:

You must record all your research information into a journal�kind of like Indiana Jones� journal but yours will be an online journal using the Penzu.comsite.

        Goto www.penzu.com

        Sign Up

        Enter the information and tell your teacher your name and password (required).

        Click the box to agree to the terms and then SUBMIT

        Follow the rest of the instructions but also according to what your teacher wants you to do.

Copy and paste the questions below into your journal and answer every question in GREAT detail. You may write in point form J.  Note: Write your responses in a different font and color that is easy to read. Use ONLY the sources made available to you by your teacher. 

You must also incorporate into your answers the following key terms (DO NOT DEFINE THEM but appropriately put them into your responses): Malinche, Reconquista, Spanish Inquisition, Monotheism, Polytheism, Missionaries & Franciscan Order, Epidemic, Encomienda, Marriage Law, Mestizo, Insatiable, Tolerance, Imperialism, Expansionism, Worldview and Civilization.

THE INCREDIBLE AZTEC EMPIRE

        GEOGRAPHY:  Where is it located?  How did the place come to be?  What was it like? Was it an easy place to live in?  How did they survive and prosper in this land?  How did they expand their empire?

        TIME: How did they tell time? Did they have a calendar?

        SOCIETY: What was their society hierarchy? What were their status symbols?  What roles were available to all individuals? Who holds power? Can anyone hold power? Who was the emperor when Spain invaded the Aztecs? 

        VALUES: How did they treat each other and those outside of their empire?

        BELIEFS: What were their beliefs about life and death? About what created their world?  How did they practice their beliefs? Did they believe in a god or gods?  If so, describe their god or gods.  Who was the head of their faith?

        ECONOMY: What were their resources? How do they obtain them? Who controlled them?

        KNOWLEDGE & TECHNOLOGY: What was their technology and education like?

 

THE INSATIABLE AND IMPERIALIST SPANISH KINGDOM

        GEOGRAPHY: Where was the capital city?  Describe what it looked like during the Renaissance.  How did they survive and prosper in this land?  How did they expand their kingdom?

        TIME: How did they tell time? Did they have a calendar?

        SOCIETY: What was their society hierarchy? What were their status symbols?  What roles were available to all individuals? Who holds power? Can anyone hold power? Who was the king or queen at the end of the Muslim rule, when the Aztecs were invaded?

        VALUES: How did they treat each other and those outside of their kingdom?

        BELIEFS: What were their beliefs about life and death? About what created their world?  How did they practice their beliefs?  Did they believe in a god or gods?  If so, describe their god or gods. Who was the head of their faith?

        ECONOMY: What were Spain�s main reasons for expanding the Spanish kingdom into the land ofthe Aztecs? Did it matter to Spain that the land already belonged to the Aztecs? Why or why not?

        KNOWLEDGE & TECHNOLOGY: What was their technology and education like?

 

THE UNAVOIDABLE CATASTROPHE

        Who is Hernan Cortes?  Was he a good guy, a bad guy, or both?

        Who is King Carlos I?

        What is a Conquistador?

        Describe how the Spanish and the Aztecs met.  When did it occur?  Was it a pleasant meeting, was it disagreeable or both?

        In what ways did factors such as technology and disease contribute to the dominance of the Spanish over the Aztec civilization?   What other factors contribute to the dominance of the Spanish over the Aztec civilization?

        How did the different worldviews of the Aztecs and the Spanish eventually lead to a war between the two nations?

        What happened to the Aztecs in the end? Did they win the battle against the conquistadors?

 

 

STEP #2:

In your online journal, you must cite all the websites and all other sources (e.g.images) you used to obtain information and artifacts.

Here�s how to set it up�DO THIS BEFORE YOU MAKE NOTES AND GATHER OTHER SOURCES:

1.    Go to McGregor's Social 8 Virtual Classroom and click onto "How to Collect the Best Sources for Your Research" from the Working Documents List.  Carefully read the section on bad sources that you should avoid and then go over the Finding the Best Sources Exercise�.

2.  Next,go back to McGregor'sSocial 8 Virtual Classroom and click onto "Why and How to Cite Sources: THERE IS SUPER SERIOUS TROUBLE IFYOU DON'T".  Copy and paste the �Sources Collection Sheet� into your online journal.  Note: Write citing information in a different font and color that is easy to read.

OTHER OPTION:

Register for free on Bibme.com!  It will create a bibliography for you! Seek link on the list of resources.  When ready to create your bibliography, select the MLA FORMAT.

Hand in your journal when done. See the calendars on myesd.net Virtual Classroom for the  ALL due dates. Your teacher will evaluate your notes and bibliography according to the rubric shown on this web quest site (Zunal.com).  Double check the rubric before you hand in your work to ensure that you did everything properly.

 

 

STEP #3:

Once your research and bibliography have been approved, you will design your tour using �MuseumBox� (http://museumbox.e2bn.org/. This site provides the tools for you to build up an argument or description of an event, person or historical period by placing items in a virtual museum box. You can display anything from a text file to a movie. You can also view and comment on the museum boxes submitted by others.  

 INTSTRUCTIONS:

          1. Go to the home page and select �START�.

          2. Click on the �Submit� button.

          3. Click on �Join for Free�.

          4. Type your first and last name as a log in name.

          5. Create a password.  You MUST have your log in name and password with your teacher.

          6. Select �OTHER�.

7. Click on �Join Museum Box�.

8.  For now, select �cancel� as you do not have a finished MuseumBox to submit.

9.  You may now begin to design your MuseumBox.  Go back to the home page to watch the video  on how to use the tools.

10. To go back into your saved MusemBox, select �Load� and log in.

Let your instructor know when your MuseumBox is done. See the calendars on myesd.netVirtual Classroom for the  ALL due dates.Your teacher will evaluate your MuseumBox according  to the rubric shown on this web quest site (Zunal.com).  Double check the rubric before you hand in your work to ensure that you did everything properly.
