My Island in the Sun: St. Croix USVI

Day 1 On the first leg of the trip students will visit http://www.gotostcroix.com/faq.php students are to read the information provided and take notes on the geography of the island. Also feel free to google the geography and location of the island for a clearer picture of where the islands are geographically. (Groups of 3). With this information students will answer the following questions:

1. Where is the island of St. Croix USVI loacated? Answer this question based on region as well as geographical location in proximity to the United States of America.

2. In reference to the climate what type of place is St. Croix USVI?

3. According to the section called Populace and Natives in the reading what can you say about the people of St. Croix, USVI in relation to human interaction based on their culture?

Day 2  Today marks the second leg of our trip around America's Paradise St. Croix USVI. Today you will be paying attention to the uniqueness of the island. As a group the classa will read from a handout Virgin Islands Culture by Harold Willocks a native of the island. Mr. Willocks will serve as our personal tour guid as he takes on a journey throgh the two towns of the island; Christiansted and Frederiksted. Here we will gain information as well as view pictures necessary for gaining a greater understanding of life on the island.

After reading the students will create an illustration including the following: National Flower, National Bird, The Flag, The shape of the island and the towns on the island.

Day 3 On day 3 of the trip students will sit on the floor as they listen to Senator Terrance "Poitive Nelson" speak about the events leading up to the Revolt of 1878 also known as "The Fireburn". Students will also view a reinactment of the event.  At the end of the viewing students will answer the following question:

1.How do you think the revolt impacted the island?

 2. How has learning about this event affected your outlook on the island St. Croix USVI?

Day 4 On day 4 of the trip students will spend the day in the life of a person on the island. The students will be paired as husband and wife. The students will each choose a career out of a hat. Based on their monthly income they will create a budget to see how the economy of the island works in accordance to how much a family make and their social classes. The students will also choose the amount of children they have from the hat. (0-5).

Day 5 On day 5 of the trip students will have fun in the sun as they research local landmarks and things indigenous to the island. In groups of four students will create their own brochure advertising the  island and its people. Be creative an innovative as this serves as one part of a two part assessment. Students must use the computer to create their brochure.
