Are Vaccinations Safe?

Step #1
Choosing /Assigning roles & examining the evaluation tool
Each of you will choose one of the following roles to represent during this project.  Each role is detailed in step  # 5.

Roles:
1.     Unbiased Journalistic Reporter presenting facts / issues / concerns from both sides of the issue.


2.     Journalistic Reporter representing the “Parent” view and leading the fight against mandatory vaccinations.


3.     Journalistic Reporter defending the usefulness of vaccinations from the Health Department / medical community’s perspective and point of view.

 

Evaluation tool:
Look at the evaluation tool “The Rubric” so that you are familiar with it and how you will be scored.


 

Step # 2
Time Management / Participation


1.     Before you start working, make sure you understand the assignment / project and what is to be completed. Ask the teacher all questions before you start to work.


2.     Discuss the assignment with your group/team to make sure all members understand what is to be done.


3.     List all tasks that must be done to complete the assignment / project.


4.     Prioritize your tasks & set a timeline to accomplish your tasks.


5.     Delegate responsibilities & cooperate with each other in your group.  Make sure that the tasks are divided as equally as possible and that each assignment complements each of your group member’s strengths as much as possible.


6.     Plan what needs to be finished and when. Individually and as a group set deadlines.  Make sure your goals are realistic.


7.     Keep the end product in mind.  While completing the individual tasks, remember they are part of a larger project. 


 

Step #3
Fact Finding 


1.     Each of you will research a minimum of 4 different websites that are listed below in your chosen “Role Section”.  Each of you will use these websites to gather your facts and information needed to write your persuasive essay on “Are Vaccinations Safe?” or create the nonbiased  informational PowerPoint. Each of you will only complete one role.  You may discuss all of your information and help each other in any way.  However, you are responsible for the final product & oral presentation for the role you have chosen.

 

2.  Remember to ask / answer the Key Questions listed in the "Task" section of this WebQuest.


 

 Step # 4
Interviews


1.     Each of you will interview at least one adult person with an interest in autism and other health concerns related to vaccinations.  As an example, this could be a teacher, parent, doctor, nurse, health department professional, or just about anyone.

 

2.     You may decide what questions you would like to ask the person you choose to interview, but you also must ask the following question.
     “Do you believe there is any relationship between Autism and other related health issues and vaccinations?”

 

3.     Preparing for the Interview:


a.     Make an appointment with the person if needed;


b.     Know a little information about the person before meeting them.


c.     Know what you want to get out of the interview ahead of time.


d.     Write your questions down before the interview, but be prepared to take a different path of questioning if necessary.


 

4.    Conducting the Interview:


a.     Be on time and prepared with paper and pen/pencil.


b.     Be friendly and courteous & thank them.


c.     Ask you questions clearly.


d.     Avoid yes or no questions.


e.     Take good notes / record all responses & later discuss with your team members.


 

Step # 5

Roles
Role #1:  Unbiased Journalistic Reporter
a.      After researching, interviewing, and discussing your findings, you will create an unbiased PowerPoint to present during the “Health Conference” (our class). 

 

b.     The PowerPoint must be 20 – 25 slides with the “Are Vaccinations Safe?” title and information discussing both sides of the issue.  The PowerPoint is to be a nonbiased presentation. Be creative and use color, pictures, facts, charts.  Remember that only you will complete this task while your other two team members complete the Persuasive essays, depending on the roles each of you has chosen. Again, each person is responsible for only one role.

Role #2:  Journalistic Reporter representing the parent view & leading the fight against mandatory vaccinations.  

a.      Your will write your own persuasive journalistic essay from the viewpoint of your role as the “Parent who is leading the fight against mandatory vaccinations”, and you will give an oral presentation at the “Health Conference” (our class) at the completion of this project.  You are to use the data and information you collected from all of your research.  Use the links below to assist you in your research.  You may use any of the resources listed in this WebQuest, but you must use the ones listed under your specific role.

http://www.vaccineinformation.org  Immunization Action Coalition.  Vaccine information for the public and health professionals.  List vaccine preventable diseases, vaccine concerns, statistics, American Academy of Pediatrics immunization policy statements, state information on immunization laws & mandates, plus state health department websites.

Step #6
Presentation


All three team members will individually give an oral presentation to the “Health Conference” (our class) using the information each of you created representing the role you chose. We will start with the PowerPoint as it is unbiased and then the two Persuasive Essays will be presented.

Persuasive Arguments Guide:


1.     Introduction: Inform the reader / listener about the issue at hand.  State the facts that surround the situation.


2.     State your case: Share evidence and expert opinions supporting your position.


3.     Examine and refute the opposition: If there are positive aspects of the opposing view, point them out, but compare them to the overall benefit of your case.


4.     Reconfirm your position: Review the main points of your arguments.


5.     Conclude that your position is better:  Be confident in your closing statements.


 

Again, please familiarize yourself with the evaluation “Rubric” before your presentation.


 

Step #7
Evaluation 


After the completion of your presentations, you will work as a team and use the “Rubric” provided to assess your project.
