Directions:

  1. Students will be grouped in teams of three to review the senerio and practice the assessment process and treatment.  Students will come to teacher and draw a group number.
  2. Each group will determine who will be the "patient", "the provider" and "the evaluator".  The students will each take a turn being the patient, the provider, and the evaluator.
  3. Each group will follow the assessment process in order during each practice assessment.
  4. "The evaluator" will follow the "Patient Assessment Guide" (resource #3 below) while "the provider" is assessing the patient.  "The evaluator" will provide guidance to "the provider" with the assessment if help is needed.
  5. "The provider" will assess and treat "the patient".  "The provider" will need to ask questions and perform a "hands on" approach for the assessment.  The student will also voice the assessment steps, findings, and treatment. The "provider" should review the assessment (resource #1 below) before beginning.  When assessing the patient, the "provider" should not use the resource while actually assessing the patient.
  6. The "patient" will print the "patient assessment answers" (resource #2) below.  The patient should review the condition/injury information so you are familiar with the answers to provide when "the provider" performs the patient assessment.  Only answers pertaining to the question which "the provider" asks should be given.  If "the patient" forgets the response for the question, "the evaluator" will answer the question for the patient.

Assessment Questions:

Answer the following questions to turn in at the end of the quest.

  1. What are potential causes for the patient's respiratory distress?
  2. At what point, if any, should you stop performing and initial assessment?
  3. What treatment should be performed during your initial assessment?
  4. What treatment should be performed during your secondary assessment?
