Biological Pest Control

Process

The research that you carry out will lead to the development of a presentation to be delivered to the rest of the group. This must be in the form of a spoken presentation and not a PowerPoint presentation. You may also want to produce handout sheets to accomany your presentation.

The following sequence may prove useful when structuring your presentation:
  -  Use examples to demonstrate the range of biological controls available.
  -  Images of sites before and after treatment to show the effects.
  -  Explain the effects of the treatment (predators or competitors) on the population of pests.
  -  Describe the risks of using biological control without proper screening.

The process itself is broken up into 3 simple steps (or just 2 steps if you're working by yourself!):

  1. If you're in a group, decide who is doing which topics from the A2 textbook and the internet-based sources. You may also want to do wider research using other textbooks, journals, news articles etc.
  2. Make sure that your knowledge and understanding of ecology is of a high enough standard to talk confidently about the areas that you are researching. You can then identify the most important facts and information for your area of the presentation. This is also the point where you can identify any useful images and statistics.
  3. Arrange your presentation into a sensible order and produce any accompanying notes/handout sheets that you want to use.
