STEP 1: ROLE ASSIGNMENT

The teacher will give each student a particular role, which will be the role you will perform throughout the tasks. These are the roles:

  • NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC REPORTERS. There will be 4 reporters and each one will work on one of these countries: France, the United Kingdom, Italy and Germany.
  • EUROPEAN HISTORICAL FIGURES. There will be 11 historical figures coming from the countries mentioned before: Montesquieu, Napoleon, Adam Smith, Emmeline Pankhurst, Queen Victoria, Churchill, James Watt, Garibaldi, Mussolini, Karl Marx and Hitler.
  • OUR BLOG 4 ENGLISH REPORTERS. There will be a reporter for each historical figure.

STEP 2: RESEARCHING STAGE

A) NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC REPORTERS: The reporters will do the necessary research to fill in the country report included below (resource 9). The websites to get the information are included in the resources section below (France: resources 1 and 2; UK: resources 3 and 4; Italy: resources 5 and 6; Germany: resources 7 and 8). To access them, the reporters just need to click on them. Moreover, they can surf the Internet for pictures.

B) EUROPEAN HISTORICAL FIGURES: The European historical figures will do the necessary research to fill in the historical figure report included below (resource 21). The websites to get the information are included in the resources section below (resources 10-20). To access them, the historical figures just need to click on them.

 C) BLOG REPORTERS: The reporters working for Our Blog 4 English will carefully study the reporter sheet included below (resource 22) in order to prepare the questions for the press conference.

 STEP 3: PREPARING THE BROADCAST

A) The National Geographic Reporters will do a visual presentation on the different countries. They will be able to use any material.

B) The Historical Figures will learn their part so that they are able to answer any question about their lives.

C) The Blog Reporters will get ready to make all the necessary questions.

STEP 4: WE ARE ON AIR

  • We will enjoy a genuine National Geographic documentary on four different European countries.
  • We will enjoy a live press conference with really important historical European figures coming from different time periods.

STEP 5: REPORTS AND AWARDS

  • The blog reporters will post their reports in the class blog so that every body can read them.
  • There will be two kinds of awards. On the one hand there will be awards for the students' performance (the most communicative figure, the best documentary and the best reporter). On the other hand, there will be a symbolic award for the most significant historical figure. All the students will take part in the election.
  • The criteria to choose the best performances will be related to the use of the English language, the pieces of work shown and the actual live performance.
  • The criteria to choose the most significant historical figure will be related to their contribution to the world and the effects and importance of their deeds.
