On December  8th, 1941,  the  Japanese attack  the  American forces  in  the   Philippine Islands,

 The  British  holdings  of  Hong Kong and   Singapore,  on  the  Malayan  peninsula.

The Japanese  are  conquering  new  territory  rapidly  while the  Americans  recover.

Japan continues  to  conquer  territory  throughout  the  Pacific  towards  Australia.

By May  of  1942,  the  Japanese  have  reached   the  Coral  Sea, where  American  ships  are waiting  for  them.

The battle  is technically  a  draw,  but  it  marks  the  first  set- back  in  Japan�s offensive.

Description: Lexington at the Coral Sea - May 7, 1942 In the first naval engagement of history fought without the opposing ships making contact, U.S. carrier forces stopped a Japanese landing at Port Moresby. The Japanese lost the light carrier Shoho and the U.S. lost the carrier, USS Lexington (CV 2).
