The average miles per gallon (mpg) of US cars these days is 24.6 miles per gallon.

To figure out how much money you will spend on travel you will need to take the amount of miles you will travel and divide in by the miles per gallon (24.6).  This will tell you how many gallons of gas you will need to purchase.
