Reading and Writing across content areas

Reading and writing skills are very important.  In order to make sure that all students have an opportunity to develop those skills, differentiation is required, especially to help develop critical thinking skills (Mansbach, Jessica. 2015).

Low-Level Learners: Low-level learners can develop critical thinking skills by utilizing some of the following techniques.
  1. Utilize closed-ended questions
  2. Utilize questions such as "According to the reading..." where the answer is clearly defined.
  3. Reflection activities to discuss things they have written or read
  4. Small group activities where students can share writing activities and read each others works.
  5. Focus on oral replies when possible.  Written work should be kept minimal.

High-Level Learners:  High-level learners can develop advanced critical thinking skills utilizing the following techniques.
  1. Utilize open-ended questions
  2. Ask "What if..." or "What do you think about..." where the answer is not defined.
  3. Peer review activities where students review each others written essays and give both oral and written replies to collaborative works
