Art and Visual Literacy

Introduction

It can be argued that visual based information is the most predominant form of communication we experience in the 21st century.  We are bombarded on a daily basis with pictures and images from around the world through our computers, televisions, and pda's.  How do we negotiate the sheer volume of visible information?
Art challenges superficiality. Developing visual literacy is a process and mental tool by which we can discover meaning in art works, as well as meaning (or not) in everyday images.  Thus, visual literacy enhances our knowledge, critical thinking, and comprehension.  In this lesson activity you will be able to test out your own knowledge and thinking by using the four step process of description, analysis, evaluation, and judgment we discussed in class, and which you have become familiar with on our class blog.  Please remember what art critic Jerry Saltz said:

"I don't look for skill in art; I look for originality, surprise, obsession, energy, and something visionary.  Skill only means technical proficiency.  Real skill has to do with being flexible and creative... Seeing as much as you can is how you learn to see."

So, let's have fun and start looking!
