The long, bloody Civil War has finally ended and Americans are trying to piece the country back together. You are a senator from Delaware, a border state, and your constituency includes both Union and Confederate sympathizers. You have the opportunity to nominate a civilian or veteran to receive either a Congressional Gold Medal to a civilian or a Medal of Honor to a veteran. Choosing a popular candidate may help unite the divided nation and gain public support. You must choose one recipient from a list of candidates to honor and explain why you chose that person. Make sure that you research the person's past and learn about all that they did during the war. Address any potential controversy and defend your decision. Why is that person a historical hero?
