Earthquakes can cause more destruction in a short amount of time than any other natural disaster. The deadliest earthquake on record is the Shaanxi earthquake of 1556, which occurred in the central region of China. Approximately 830,000 people lost their lives, which was around 60% of the population of that area! The most powerful earthquake on record is the 1960 Valdivia earthquake in Chile. It weighed in between 9.3 and 9.6 on the Richter Scale. The effects were felt over 10,000 kilometers away in Japan! Above is a picture of a street in Valdivia after the earthquake.

During this project you will become familiar with earthquakes, their probability, the physics behind it, how their measured, and public health issues resulting from earthquakes.

Check out this video showing you what it would look like if you in an earthquake. This is actual footage during an earthquake in California.
