What Tooth Am I Holding?

Introduction

When you look at the above picture, can you determine exactly what tooth number should be assigned to each tooth?  Dental Hygiene students need to be able to look at an individual tooth,  observe the tooth morphology and determine exactly what tooth it is in the mouth by correctly assigning a tooth number(1-32).   Having this knowledge allows dental hygienists to effectively debride all tooth surfaces, even those under the gums that are not visible.  One way of gaining necessary knowledge of tooth morphology is by examining extracted teeth to determine the tooth number.  Recognizing tooth numbers for dental hygiene students while teeth are in the mouth is accomplished by starting at number one on the upper right posterior and counting as they move around the arch.  When teeth are presented for study as the above picture shows, how do students begin to determine exactly what tooth they are studying?  This activity will set up a series of questions that will allow the student a set of steps to successfully and confidently determine extracted tooth number.
