Surgical oncology patients will require venous access prior to going into the operating room. There are several different types of accesses: peripheral or central. This WebQuest will provide you with best practice guidelines as well as videos and websites to increase your knowledge and provide a foundation prior to demonstrating skills and competency in peripheral I.V. insertion.  Your competency evaluation will consist of participation in this WebQuest, including successful completion of a pre-test and post-test, successful completion of a skills lab, and 3-5 successful I.V. starts on patients.

Important things to remember
Description: Hospital-acquired infections (HAI's) can lead to prolonged hospitalization, sepsis, and increased healthcare costs. Oncology patients are at an increased risk due to immunosuppression from their disease or neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Hand hygiene and using aseptic technique can minimize or prevent catheter-associated infections (which is one type of HAI).
