A Day in the Life of a Slave

Slavery has had a profound impact on the United States' development as a nation. It is part of our past that has shaped our country's views on what it means to be free and equal. When the Declaration of Independence was written our Founding Fathers wrote about our unalienable rights "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." They were only referring to white men, however, what we've learned from slavery is that everyone, regardless of race or gender, deserves those rights.

  • How did slavery change our point of view from only white men deserving those rights to everyone deserving those rights?
