Student Self-Assessment, Feedback and Goal Setting

Introduction

What do I know? What don't I know? What would I like to know?

What am I good at? What do I need to work on?

Having your students ask these questions makes them active participants in their education.

As students begin to recognize their own strengths and weaknesses, they become more familiar with their own learning styles, enabling them to set goals that they feel they can attain with the new knowledge they have about themselves.

There are a variety of ways to provide your students with self-assessments tools. The simplest questions can encourage students to think about their work. Some examples include:
1. How much time and effort did you put into this?

2. What do you think you did well? What do you think you need to work on?

3. How could you improve your assignment?

4. What did you learn from this assignment?

It is important for teachers to model self-assessment too!

Teachers need to show their students that it is important for everybody to self-evaluate by doing their own self-evaluations. Asking your students for feedback on how the class is going and what they think is working well and not so well is a simple way to start. As a teacher, you can illustrate that you want to make improvements too. This shows your students that continuous improvement is important.
