A Journey to the Land of the Tainos

History tells us about our past. it gives us a sense of direction. The Tainos were the first known inhabitants of the island of Jamaica. they travelled from Asia to North and South America. The word Taino means good or noble. The leader of the Tainos is called the Cacique. The Tainos were brown skinned, medium height and plump in built. They were peaceful and easy going. they were mostly farmers who planted manioc/ corn, potatoes, yam, tobacco and cotton. The Tainos lived in houses called Caneye. They believed in many gods and worshipped nature and their ancestors. Their gods were represented by zemis.
