It's All Greek to Me

Students will learn about Ancient Greece through a series ofactivities that will address: American History, world history, civics/government, geography, and economics. The first task will show the shipping and trading connection between Greece and America. This will be done by having the students map the different shipping and trading routes in the early 1900s between Greece and America. The map should be researched through the internet showing the different routes in colored pencil. The students should create a colored key showing the different shipping and trade routes between Greece and America. The second task will be a cooking activity for small groups of 3 or 4.  Students must pick a recipe that uses either grapes, Greek olives or Greek Olive Oil.  The recipes will be researched on the Internet and approved by the teacher. Students must present their finished recipe with a presentation on notes cards about the history of grapes, Greek Olives and Olive Oil in Greece.  How these two ingredients have been maintained over the years in Greece.  The third task for students will be for the them to turn their classroom into the Greek ship Uluburun from the late Bronze Age. The students must research the details of the ship, the crew, and the characteristics of the crew and the duties of the crew.  The fourth task will be for students to develop an understanding and comprehension of the early governments of Ancient Greece.  The students will develop five questions from a timeline provided by the teacher. The class will come together like a Senate to solve a global issue which the entire class has agreed upon is a problem issue for that era.  The fifth task will entail the students to take split notes based on information provided from the teacher in the form of a power-point and class discussion.  The student will together categories from the information provided by the teacher.  Students will discuss their findings through a class appointed summarizer, questioner, clarifier, and predictor.
