Child Labor and Sweat Shops around the World

Introduction

Imagine that instead of your parents enrolling you into school they send you to work in a hot, crowded factory where you are required to work hard to make products from sun up to sun down?  Imagine that you are not allowed to spend your day enjoying friends, learning new things, or enjoying activities of any kind.  There is no more recess, gym, art, music, or extracurricular activities for you to enjoy and grow from.  Your hands are sore, sweaty, and maybe even bloody but you are ordered to keep on working.  You may be hungry and thirsty but no ones seems to care about your needs being met.  You are one of the 250 million child laborers who are forced to work in sweatshops to make products for big international companies. This is the reality for many children around the world!  The International Labor Organization has estimated that over 250 million children between the ages of five and fourteen work in these sweatshops in developing countries.  61% in Asia. 32% in Africa.  7% in Latin America.

What are the contributing factors to the existence of sweatshops?

What are the conditions of these sweatshops?

What is being done in the Anti-sweatshop movement?

What are pro-sweat shop arguments?
