A CREATIVE STORY

Introduction

We are going to explore the realm of imagination and get to see what stories are made of!

So, to begin writing, you first need to know what Narrative Writing is.

Narrative Writing is simple writing to tell a story. We all tell stories each day so it is nothing strange to us. You tell your parents about your day at school or you tell about your weekend to your friends on Monday with suspense and laughter.

However, before you start writing,  you need to first understand the process and the elements involved:

  1. Exposition (introduction-Characters: who? & Setting-where? when?)
  2. Intrigue (where the problem is introduced)
  3. Rising action (the real adventure of the characters' exploration in all its complexity; this part is usually longer and constitutes the body of the story)
  4. Climax (the highest point of the story)
  5. Falling action (the problem is being resolved)
  6. Resolution (the conclusion of the story: after the finding of the solution what moral lesson can be drawn)

It is very important for you to learn about story writing. By creating and telling a story, you learn to organize your thoughts and use written language to communicate with readers in a variety of ways. Writing stories also helps you to be able to read and understand stories written by other people.

A character is a person, or sometimes even an animal, who takes part in the action of a short story. (When creating a new character, ask yourselves: "What do we like about this new character?" Give your characters a personality that makes them stand out from each other.)

The setting of a short story is the time and place in which it happens. (Give your story a setting, a time, describe the scenery, etc. Ask yourselves: "Where does the story take place?" and try to answer in colourful images that you describe in words.)

The beginning of the story is essential but also make sure your story is in order and the beginning, middle, and end tie into each other. So again, ask yourselves: "Is there a connection, either in words or pictures, between the ending and the beginning of the story?"

A plot (rising action) is a series of events and character actions that relate to the central conflict (usually mentioned in the intrigue-- in a camouflaged or overt manner). The theme is the central idea or belief in a short story and the problem or conflict can be, for example, a struggle between two people or things/animals in a short story.

REMINDER> Remember that the first sentence of your narrative should catch the reader's attention with the unusual, an inciting action or situation, an unexpected close-up into the life of the main character (s).
