Topicor Theme:

The theme is social issues with the module The World Around Us. The particular unit we arefocusing on is called Caring for the Environment. It is on environmentalissues students are experiencing in their daily life.

ProfessionalObjectives:

Reading Task

Discussion Task

Writing Task

There are a few personal professional objectives for the lesson. Firstly, to enable my students to recognize the communicative functions of the English language (Curriculum Development Council, 2004) and to feel that it is meaningful to learn English (Harmer, 2007). That can be achieved by adopting a task-based and theme-based approach (Willis, 2007). Secondly, to make students interested in English. This would enhance their intrinsic motivations to facilitate learning (Zhang, Biggs, Watkins, 2010).

To encourage students to not only learn about the environment because of the required tasks, but to use it as a tool to reflect on their own lives and habits.

If they can personalize their own learning, this will create a more impressionable and  meaningful learning experience for students. This personalized and contextualized way of language learning helps students better retain information in their memory (Hedge, 2000).

One of the major objectives for the task is to contextualize the writing task and put it under an authentic learning situation. Through writing an article, not only will students be able to express their concern regarding the protection of the environment, it also helps spread this important message to their schoolmates by using English as a medium. It makes learning English a meaningful and communicative experience.
