Expressionism

Expressionist painting is one of the most difficult art movements to define, which also makes it one of the most interesting art movements to explore.  Expressionism started as a way for artists to express their emotions in their artwork.  Prior to Expressionist painting, it was usually expected for artists to paint typical, everyday subjects, but Expressionism gave artists an opportunity to respond to those subjects, rather than simply paint them, by using bold colors, energetic brushstrokes, and even abstraction to communicate their thoughts and feelings.
