Four important civilizations developed around river valleys by the year 2000 B.C. These civilizations were able to flourish due to rich soil, which helped sustain large populations,  and access to trade routes, which facilitated cultural diffusions and the creation of advanced economic systems.

The civilizations which existed in Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Indus River Valley, and the Huang He River Valley, were advanced societies. These civilizations all established complex economic, political, religious, and social systems. In addition, systems of writing and advancements in art, architecture, and technology were common features of these peoples.

Despite these similarities, each of these civilizations exhibited unique characteristics which have contributed in singular ways to the overall development of human history.
