The unit will begin with review lessons of the importance of democracy and the addition of the Bill of Rights to the Constitution, discussing the pursuit of individual rights during the birth of our nation. Discussion will then proceed to the Emancipation Proclamation, and then move forward in time to discuss the civil rights movement. Students will also discuss parallels between the following speeches; Declaration of Independence, Gettysburg Address, and I Have a Dream!
