Civics & Government (Thursday) Politics has been known to appear in the Olympics Games. Some athletes (non-athletes and countries) have used them as a sounding board to express social and political injustices. In your original groups, you will:

Investigate Politics in the Olympics: During some of the Olympics throughout the years, there have been significant events to occur based on various political standpoints. Along with a brief oral presentation on your research, you will visit www.funtrivia.com and design an online challenge game for your peers in order to test their knowledge on what was learned. Here are the teams:

  • Team 1: 2002 –Salt Lake City, Utah
  • Team 2: 1972- Munich, West Germany
  • Team 3: 1968- Mexico City, Mexico
  • Team 4: 1936- Berlin, Germany
  • Team 5: 1928 –Amsterdam, Netherlands

Blog: The events surrounding these particular Olympic Games have affected a number of nations. Choose one of the researched years and imagine yourself living during that time. What would be your reactions to the events that occurred? What are some suggestions you could offer in improving the situation? Extension activity: Poll your friends and family on their thoughts about the Olympics. Are their views similar to or different than yours? Whats stories do they have regarding their experience and the Olympics? You can also add this information to your blog.

Economics (Friday) There can be success, failure, rewards and history made when hosting the Olympics. While some countries like China are still benefitting from the profits of hosting in 2008, others like 2004's host country Greece have resulted in bankrupcy. Using the provided webpages, each group will compare and contrast past hosting countries You must examine information the International Olympic Committee (IOC) examines such as city landforms, venue sites and budgeting.Using computer/internet resources, your country will:

Create a Business Plan Brochure: For the country of your choice, you will create a tri-fold brochure that will reflect your group's reasoning for why this country was chosen for best hosting site. Referring to the webpages, you must include athlete and sport event accommodations, public safety/security budgets, entertainment budgets on your current and funds generated from cities and corporate sponsors. To gain a greater understanding of the pressures experienced by hosting site candidates, peers from another class will be used to form a mock International Olympic Committee. They will vote on the most informed brochure. Make sure to be neat, organized and thorough on presenting information in your brochures. Remember, your work ethics can help or hinder your chances for winning.

Blog: Based on your research, it takes a lot for countries to prepare for the Olympics. Discuss the benefits of a city hosting an event. What are some setbacks? If there is a loss in revenue, what are some things the country can do to revive its economy?
