Encountering Weapon Violence in the Hospital: A Guide for Medical Personnel

Active Shooter Situations are Unpredictable and Evolve Quickly.

Because active shooter situations are often over within 10 to 15 minutes, before law enforcement arrives on the scene, individuals must be prepared both mentally and physically to deal with an active shooter situation. Active Shooter events at a healthcare facility present unique challenges; healthcare professionals may be faced with decisions about leaving patient; visitors will be present; and patients or staff may not be able to evacuate due to age, injury, illness, or a medical procedure in progress. Healthcare professionals have a duty to care for the patients for which they are responsible. Since incidents such as an active shooter scenario are highly dynamic, some ethical decisions may need to be made to ensure the least loss of life possible (Active Shooter Booklet, n.d., p. 2)
