The Dead Zone
Conclusion
In this webquest you have learned how excess nutrients can lower dissolved oxygen levels, creating hypoxic (low-oxygen) or anoxic (no oxygen) water. You have also learned some ways that people can change their daily habits and practices to help reduce the amount of nutrients getting into our local waterways.
However, nutrients are not the only problem facing the Elizabeth River and Chesapeake Bay. Toxic chemicals, excess sediment, not enough Submerged Aquatic Vegitation, disappearing wetlands, too many bad bacteria, declining oyster populations, and a reduction in "green" natural shorelines are just a few of the other serious problems we need to address. Check out the links below for more information on these issues, and what you and your family can do to help.
